Honoring a Legacy in Seismic Engineering
Loring A. Wyllie, Jr. marks an incredible milestone this year: his 60th work anniversary with Degenkolb Engineers! A Distinguished Career
Loring’s journey in engineering began at the University of California, Berkeley, where he earned his B.S. and M.S. degrees in Civil (Structural) Engineering. Immediately after, he joined Degenkolb Engineers and embarked on a career that has spanned over six decades. Throughout his tenure, Loring has specialized in the seismic assessment and retrofitting of buildings, many of which hold historical significance.
His deep commitment to preserving the architectural heritage while enhancing seismic safety led him to chair the State Historical Building Safety Board. This role allowed him to evaluate and analyze methods for strengthening buildings without compromising their historical integrity.
Recognitions and Contributions
Loring’s contributions to structural engineering have been recognized by numerous institutions. He was elected to the National Academy of Engineering in 1990, acknowledging his impactful work in the field. The American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) granted him the Outstanding Projects and Leaders (OPAL) Lifetime Achievement Award for design in 2007, and he was elected an honorary member in 2001. In 2017, the Structural Engineers Association of Northern California (SEAONC) honored him with the H.J. Brunnier Lifetime Achievement Award and he was later recognized as a SEAONC Fellow in 2023.
Additionally, Loring’s expertise in concrete design and performance earned him honorary membership in the American Concrete Institute in 2000. He also served as President of both SEAONC and the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute (EERI).
A Lifelong Commitment to Seismic Safety
Loring’s career is not only defined by his roles and recognitions but also by his active participation in peer reviews and contributions to building codes. Since 1972, he has been a member of the American Concrete Institute’s Committee 318, which develops building code requirements for reinforced concrete construction. His insights have influenced seismic safety standards nationwide.
