120 Stockton Street Building Renovation

WHAT WE DID

Degenkolb is providing construction engineering services on the extremely complex renovation of the former Macy’s Men’s Store in San Francisco.

Degenkolb is providing construction engineering services on the renovation of the former Macy’s Men’s Store in San Francisco. The building renovation requires major modifications to the existing building’s gravity and lateral system.  The existing perimeter concrete shear wall lateral system will be removed and a new central core shear wall and BRB frames will be constructed.  Approximately half of the building’s concrete columns were demolished to allow for the construction of newly reconfigured walls and columns.  The existing post-tensioned girders and joists are being temporarily de-tensioned, partially demolished, reprofiled, and re-tensioned to accommodate the new structure.  The original roof level was demolished to make way for a newly constructed steel framed roof level.  The east side of the building is being demolished from level 7 down to the basement and will be reconfigured and reconstructed with steel-framed floors.  The first floor will be demolished in its entirety to allow for construction of a stepped first floor that provides level in access to the individual retail spaces along the sloping streets.  The Degenkolb construction engineering scope of work required temporary shoring and bracing throughout the demolition and construction phases of the project, including structural steel shoring frames supporting over 8 million pounds of otherwise unsupported concrete floors.  Degenkolb was also responsible for other typical construction engineering tasks such as man lift tie-in design, reshoring, wall bracing, slab evaluation, localized shoring, scaffold support, and access bridges on this extremely complex project.
