WHAT WE DID

Degenkolb performed seismic evaluations and designed the seismic retrofit for a historic banking hall building (400 California) and the adjacent 21-story tower (430 California) that was being repositioned for new tenants.

Degenkolb performed seismic evaluations and designed the seismic retrofit for a historic banking hall building (400 California) and the adjacent 21-story tower (430 California) that was being repositioned for new tenants. The banking hall–a San Francisco Designated Landmark–was originally constructed in 1908 and renovated in 1967 when the adjacent 430 California high-rise was constructed. Degenkolb performed seismic evaluations of both buildings and produced seismic strengthening schemes. Analysis indicated the tower had significant seismic capacity and would meet the desired performance objective, but that the historic banking hall would not. The innovative seismic retrofit tied the roof of the banking hall to the tower with strategically placed friction dampers while also strengthening the banking hall roof diaphragm and adding new shear walls, new concrete piers and bond beam, and new foundation elements. Degenkolb also provided construction engineering services directly to the general contractor, including engineering for path of travel, rigging for the steel erection at Level 3 of the tower, and equipment loading on the existing floor and roof slabs.
