Arcade Building Seismic Retrofit

WHAT WE DID

Degenkolb performed a seismic retrofit and adaptive reuse for this historic building in Downtown Los Angeles.

Designed the seismic retrofit for this grand 1920’s, 12-story historic building in the Downtown Los Angeles Historic Core, converting it from an office building into apartments. The 200,000 square foot building was a reinforced concrete construction with brick and masonry infill. The strengthening preserved the structure’s unique historic character including the distinctive Radio Towers, Arcade, and unique exterior façade. Strengthening of the building met the City of Los Angeles’ Adaptive Reuse provision.

Features:

  • 12 stories
  • 200,000 square feet
  • Historic Building
  • Converted office building into apartments.
  • Added mezzanine levels to select units.
  • Was the set for large portions of the movie Daredevil starring Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner. This occurred during the initial feasibility and material investigation phase of the project.

Benefits:

  • One of the early adaptive use projects along Broadway that seeded the transformation of this area of Downtown Los Angeles.
  • The ground floor merchants occupied the building during construction.
  • Preserved all of the exterior windows.
