WHAT WE DID
Fusselman Hall opens as the temporary main library after a seismic retrofit.
Fusselman Hall, at the College of Marin Kentfield Campus, is an historically significant building. Originally built in 1939, the wood-framed two-story structure over a concrete partial basement is the only remaining building from the original Kentfield campus. Through the years, the building has undergone additions and remodeling work. Starting in 2018, Degenkolb performed a seismic evaluation and building envelope investigation with the assistance of Richard Avelar & Associates. After completing the study, the District asked Degenkolb Engineers to serve as prime for the seismic retrofit work. The retrofit included strengthening the building with new plywood shear walls and roof diaphragm strengthening. Additional scope included building envelope improvements (waterproofing of the basement, roof repairs/replacement, new windows), a new exit ramp for ADA compliance, miscellaneous repairs and improvements to the HVAC, plumbing and electrical systems, regrading for improved drainage, and new landscaping surrounding the building.
During construction, Degenkolb was asked to implement tenant improvements to Fusselman Hall so that the building could serve as the campus’ temporary library. The scope included the build-out of a main library room with shelving, resource desks, workstations and library security; new computer classrooms with power and data; and library staff offices and workrooms with power and data. This work was reviewed approved by DSA through a Construction Change Directive.
