WHAT WE DID

Designed the reconstruction and seismic strengthening of the historic library core after the demolition of the central stack area.

Designed the reconstruction and seismic strengthening of the historic library core after the demolition of the central stack area. The historic library is a steel load-bearing frame with concrete infill building designed in the early 1900s by John Galen Howard. Also designed the seismic strengthening of the historic North Reading Room. As a historic structure, the structural retrofit was designed within the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards and Guidelines for the Treatment of Historic Properties. The immediate building areas were closed for construction; however, the remainder of the library was open throughout construction.

Features:

  • Secretary of Interior’s Standards and Guidelines for historic properties
  • Historic preservation seismic strengthening

Benefits:

  • Library operational during construction
  • Preservation of original John Galen Howard structure
